My parents thought the Blues was Devil's Music
"Please allow me to introduce myself,.I'm a man of wealth and taste!I been around for a long, long, year,Stole many a mans soul and faith!Mick Jagger/Keith Richards Sympathy for the Devil! My parents thought the Blues was Devil's Music as have every generation of kids and parents before and since, because it's different more than anything else, if we were to go back and listen to our parents music there would be no growth and people would tire of the SOS (Same Old S...)! Maybe the lyrics were looser "Got my Mojo Working" as opposed to Amazing Grace? But I like them boyj!

While it is a good treatment of the history of the blues
While it is a good treatment of the history of the blues, it would be really nice if sellers would stop putting stickers all over the ISBN tag on back. Some of us actually use programs and applications that read the ISBN number to catalog books.

Good book in regards to blues history.
Been a big fan of blues music for 40 years. This book is a good read in regards to where the blues came from and how they migrated North. Although written in the 1970's it's still a good read today. Touches a little on the many artists and they've influences.Good read. You won't be disappointed.

Ok. But you can find better books on the subject.
The book is ok. Very descriptive. I think you'll have a better blues history book with Francis Davis book's.

Devil in the detail.
Bought this without realising it was tied in to the old BBC series of the same name which I watched not so long back on i-player. Goes into much more depth and detail than the programme and takes in not just the music but the background and history and the effects of changing times and locations on the Blues as it was and is played. Gives more space to the women of the Blues than many other similar themed books.Predictable as many blues stories and characters are if you have read a few books already, The Devils Music nevertheless contained many little nuggets of info and reminiscences that I had not come across before. There is an odd thickness of page and a grainy look to the print and the b&w picture plates that some may not like, but I found it to be kind of in keeping with the books style as a whole, so not sure if it is a deliberate effect or just cost cutting on the print run.Very satisfying read that had me reaching for my cd's more than once.

The Devil's Music
The Devil's Music: A History Of The Blues As explained in the preface, this book was originally published in connection with a documentary film series made for BBC television in 1976. All I can say is that if the series was as entertaining and educational as Oakley's book (and I am sure it must have been), I deeply regret not having been able to see it on T.V. The best way of explaining why this book is indispensable to any fan of the Blues is to paraphrase the blurbs on the back. This book is almost unique in its approach in doing what should always have been obvious to all other writers on the subject: it makes clear that you cannot abstract Blues music, or the musicians who made it, from its American social and historical context. Oakley also shows that the Blues did not, and COULD not have evolved totally independently of, and uninfluenced by other forms of music (Jazz, etc) In addition to simply being a VERY good, very entertaining book about the Blues, another strong point in its favour is the excellent quality of the actual writing - something we can't always take for granted. This is a book you can't stop reading. Unfortunately, there is only one drawback. Presumably because of the quality of the paper it is printed on, the photographs in the middle are very poorly reproduced. All in all a great book thoroughly recommended.
