Surprisingly Effective a Tool !!
I would highly recommend this as a very good device to have for casual self-defense purposes. The unit is fully functional as a pen, but excels as a tool to support you in a self-defense situation. It would seem that all Cold Steel products are well engineered and made of very good quality materials. I don't believe I have ever purchased anything that has let me down. It is the same for the Pocket Shark. It is very sturdy, and obviously made to take and survive a beating. It works much like a Kubaton. The difference here is that it does not scream out - weapon of expediency, but simply a fat pen. The clip allows this to be mounted on a great variety of places and things. It is light enough to be clipped to the inside of your shirt, or pocket. It is there for you, but out of the way.Like a Kubaton, there are many supported strikes that can be made with it. It performs well here. I am not sure that it can smash through a car window, but it will leave a substantial dent in a door. Not that these are your targets, they are a testament how effective this device would be on a would-be attacker. As well, the Pocket Shark seems to be perfect for using this to support joint locks and joint manipulations. My co-instructor and I have experimented with this, and there are some advantages to this over the classic wood and metal style Kubatons.I think that Cold Steel should also market a training DVD for using this as a striking implement and as well as a joint lock support device. For anyone with some training in self-defense, it would not take long to add this to your arsenal of weapons of expediency. No one wants a fight, but when that decision is taken away from you, it is best to be prepared.

Functional, does what it says and not expensive
I ordered this on a whim but I am quite happy with it.When I received it the first thing I thought was wow this thing is huge, it's like one of those giant markers that sit in the back of a draw and you never use until you move house or something, but then I took the cap off and the tip is a lot smaller than you would imagine for a pen this size, it's actually a fine tip sharpie and works very well with the jumbo grip. It's very light so I now carry it in my laptop case everywhere I go.It's very thick walls and overall size make it a very capable striking instrument, I let loose on a chunk of old drywall in the garage and it did some real damage, you can put some weight behind it and it wont break, very good to know if you're ever attacked by drywall, you can focus a lot of energy into a very small point.

Less conspicuous is the key
I frequently dabble with small, less than lethal defense methods for everyday carry, such as pepper spray, kubotans, tactical pens, etc. During warmer months, I like to wear loose comfortable shorts, so I don't want to carry anything too heavy or bulky. I also have no desire cut anyone, nor the legal ramifications for doing so, so I don't really carry knives for that purpose. I have a couple of kubotans, but they have no secondary purpose and no pocket clip, which I really wanted. I have a tactical pen, but the top has a sharp point for glass breakage or whatever, so it's obviously tactical and doesn't look like a regular pen sticking out of my pocket. A regular pen is inconspicuous, but not that tough. I could have paid for a more expensive tactical pen that looks like a pen, then I saw this. Yes, it is so large as to be a little absurd, but clipped to the pocket, doesn't necessarily scream 'weapon'. If you pulled it out and started writing (which it does decently), it would look a bit comical though. So, it just looks like you have a big marker sticking out of your pocket, which doesn't immediately cause red flags. essentially. I think it's about the best you can to do combine a kubotan with any sort of writing utensil. It seems sturdy. I did 4 stars because the clip doesn't seem as sturdy as the rest of the pen. Also, it is very smooth and can be slippery. A think it could be maybe filed a little or something, to get some more grip to it. It is a very decent price though.

HAS POTENTIAL, BUT LIMITING.
LETS GET to the bad first, for SELF-DEFENSE it will be a deal breaker, the SHARK unfortunately requires about 5 hand twist to get past the threaded screw on cap, to get the cap off..Such-a shame COLD-STEEL, might I suggest you just put a rubber washer gasket at the connecting halves of the lid and BUSINESS TIP*, allowing FAST exposure into “action“.

Nice EDC
Nice EDC pen. It is G1, so it will not set off any detectors or scanners. That being said, keep that in mind you must maintain the edge if you do have to use it. Otherwise a great piece of concealed carry.

Just as nice as the last 2
Such a good edc item. I liked it so much I’ve bout three of them. Hopefully I won’t lose or mess this one up.Update 5/19/24 sadly it broke again so I can't clip it to my shirt or pocket....so in the glove box it goes. Ordered a bastion to replace it. Oh well...was only 8 bucks anyways...

Feels great in hands
Like the way marker writes, has a fine tip, doesn't smear, smooth & it feels great in the hand with the big size. Cap screws on which helps stop link from drying out. I do wish cap would fit on back of marker.
